Mother’s Day 2020: 8 ways to treat the Queen’s in your life from a distance

by Beth Abood |

While many of us may not be able to spend this Mother’s Day with our Mums, Grandmothers or the other great female figures in our lives, there are many other ways we can make them feel special!

We’ve searched the internet to give you this list of 8 ideas you can use to celebrate your ladies from a distance.

1. Book a virtual painting class with Cork and Canvas

For those who don’t know Cork & Canvas, they normally run paint and sip sessions around the country, which is just as it sounds. But since their venues have been shut down they’ve been offering on-demand "Paint & Sip" online workshops via Zoom for $25 (materials and wine purchases are on top) – a fun activity to do one-on-one with Mum, or if the whole family wants to do it together then groups of 10+ can book a private live class.

2. Mail her a handwritten letter

Receiving a handwritten letter literally makes me squeal with excitement, probably because it’s such a rare surprise these days. The idea that someone spent time slowly crafting sentences makes me melt, and I imagine Mum might feel the same. This is such a thoughtful and nice thing to do and it’ll only cost you postage. But you better get on this one quick if you want it to get there before Mother’s Day!

3. Have a Netflix party

Did you know you there is a Google Chrome browser extension called Netflix party that lets you watch shows with other people from your own houses? The extension synchronises video playback and has a group chat function, so if you want your siblings in on it too you can all join in on the commentary while you’re watching. Also, it’s free!

4. Send a bouquet of flowers or a collection of gifts

The gift of flowers is so timeless and special and brings such a nice surprise to the lucky receiver. It would be remiss of me not to mention that this Mother’s Day Floreat will be offering our usual range of flowers for delivery all over Sydney on Mother’s Day, with our books, pantry items, candles, chocolates, vases, soaps and gift voucher also available from our online shop either separately as add ons or on their own. We have also curated a special collection of some of our favourite gifts for Mother's Day! Everything but the flowers can be mailed anywhere in Australia, but best to get your order in quick so we can get it there in time.

5. Sign her up for a Masterclass

If you’ve not heard of it, Masterclass is a website that offers filmed classes from the best in the biz, including Gordon Ramsey, Anna Wintour, Annie Leibovitz, Serena Williams, and Bobbi Brown to name a few. So if Mum has a bit of extra time on her hands these days, this would be a great way for her to fill it. They’ve got an offer on at the moment; buy one annual membership for $280 and get the other free, which means this is actually a cheeky double gift! Maybe you can learn something together.

6. Buy a book, magazine or Audible subscription

Quite a few local book stores are setting up regular book subscription services as a way of helping us all through this time! Check if one nearby to her is delivering, or go old school and sign up to a magazine that she might like. If she has a kindle or e-reader, you can buy an eGiftcard to top up her account, but if she prefers listening to reading then Audible is perfect for audiobooks and podcasts and you can sign her up for one, three, six months or a year.

7. Invite her to a virtual dinner party

Share a meal with Mum/Grandma or the whole fam via a virtual video call. Set it up in advance on one of the many video chat services (Zoom, Houseparty, Facetime etc), and you can each cook the same pre-planned meal and enjoy it together. Or, if you’d rather she didn’t have to cook her own meal on Mothers Day, get it delivered straight to her door and support a local restaurant doing Mother’s Day meals.

8. Schedule a post-Iso treat

Another way to thoughtfully support a small business doing it tough at the moment and treat your mum is to schedule a post-iso treat! This could be a gift card for a local spa, clothing store, restaurant, café or cinema. All should re-open in a few months time with our support and getting ready to leave the house for something other than groceries will give her something to look forward to.
