Winter at the flower market : June 2021

by Jane Lampe |

What a beautiful first few days of winter we have had, beautiful sunshine, and this is the best time for sunrises.

Also the best time for wintry goodness at the markets. Here are some of our favourites that are emerging at the moment.

1. Begonia

Meaning - uniqueness, harmony, gratitude, or caution

You might think that begonias are just a pot plant - but their cut flowers are stunning, and can last for WEEKS!!! The amazing Arietta from T and ME Schepel on the central coast, goes around their begonia shed and picks it for special customers like us, and we were very excited to get our first bucket for the season today!

2. Cyclamen

Meaning - Love and Sincere Tenderness

Still looking better than ever, our beautiful cyclamen is also carefully picked by our friend Arietta. They are so cute on their own in a little vase, but are also fun mixed into one of our bright bouquets.

They come in the most beautiful shades of pink, red, and of course white.

3. White japonica blossom

Meaning - Preference

The first of the blossoms have arrived at the markets! A slow burn, they. might look like sticks when they first arrive, but their perfect little white florets with yellow centres slowly open, and last for ages.

4. Hyacinths

Meaning - Please forgive me

The only thing hyacinths need forgiveness for is that they aren't around all year!! Tight when they arrive, they open to be full heads of perfumed happiness. I love them.

5. Geraldton Wax

This beautiful native coming in pinks, purples and whites is a firm favourite with a beautiful, fresh scent.

6. Silver Princess Gum

The flowering gums are beautiful at the moment, but our favourite is the Silver Princess, or Caesia gum, specially picked by Craig from East Coast Wildflowers.

And here are a few flowers also featured last month, but still looking good!

7. Cymbidium orchids

Meaning - morality and virtue

So many more to choose from than last month, we love using these in EVERYTHING!!! These look good in everything, and last so well. They come in beautiful colours, including Burgundy, tans, different shades of pink, white, yellow, orange and green. Yay!!!

The camellias are starting to bloom beautifully, we love them for both their flowers and their foliage!

9.  Tulips

Meaning - Deep Love

We love the double tulips, because when they open up they look almost like a peony or a beautiful rose!

They come in a lovely creamy white, different shades of pink, Burgundy and purple. We also love the parrot tulips, and these come in reds, pinks and white.

10. Poppies

Meaning - Restful sleep and Recovery

Another favourite, Poppies are popping up now!! They come in such fantastic colours, and I love it that they literally pop open!!

11. Giant candle banksias

Also native to Australia, these stunning banksias have a beautiful rusty colour, and look amazing in our native bouquets, or even our botanic ones. They also dry out really nicely and are perfect if you want something to last a long time and retain it's colour.
