This may have just landed in my top two favourite flower books of all time!
As a florist working in Sydney, I find it’s easy to get lost in the busyness and scale of it all; buying masses of flowers quickly and well at the market to avoid missing out on the best flowers, fulfill orders and get them out the door, knock event after event over. But this book, and Annabelle’s country lifestyle, introduced me to an entirely different perspective on floristry, one that’s more focused on the fundamentals of what floristry is, which is bringing the beauty and joy of the season to people or a place in an uncomplicated and natural way.
Annabelle is not formally trained, she taught herself everything she knows and is a wonderful flower forager and arranger. In the book she walks us through the process of bringing flowers into your home or another space, and what impressed me the most was how comprehensive this book is for someone wanting to learn the basics of floristry. It has such detailed instructions, which I think non-trained florists/flower lovers would find super useful, and a lot of advice on aspects you don’t see often in print, such as how to transport a vase of flowers for a friend in your car, how to pin a boutonniere onto a groom and my favourite, very useful page for event florists: the list at the back of the book titled “Plants That Last Well Out Of Water” and it’s “Notorious Wilters” subheading – brilliant!
This was such an enjoyable read – the images, the actual flower types themselves (everything is so natural and wild), the writing (Annabelle is honest, witty and a brilliant storyteller, I loved her stories about country folk!) and just the overall beauty of the books design.
Highly recommended for anyone.
