Australian Native Flowers in Spring

Spring is obviously THE month for flowers. After lying dormant for much of winter, it's around now (August) that some of the really exciting, early spring flowers start popping up at the market.

But what is really exciting are the Australian native flowers that are starting to arrive, they really do make my heart sing.

Here are some of my favourite spring native flowers.

1. Waratahs

Waratahs are in their prime in September. Can you beat them? I think not. My favourites are the white ones, but they also come in the traditional red you probably all know, as well as a dark pink, and also a really unique apricot colour!

2. Flannel flowers

Another favourite of mine, while you can often source the odd bunch of flannel flowers throughout the year, in September, they are triple the height, and 10 times the quantity! Gosh I love them.

3. Blushing Bride

Blushing bride are seriously stunning, they come in a really like pink, almost cream colour, and a darker pink, or "sugar and spice".

4. Paper Daisies

Or everlasting daisies, are really coming into their peak now! They are beautiful in a bouquet or arrangement, and if you hang them upside down to dry, they are perfect as a dried flower!

5. Kangaroo paws

An Australian native, originally from Western Australia, kangaroo paws can be sourced for most of the year, but this is their time, and we love them - most of all, they literally look like a kangaroo paw!

They come in many colours, from deep red, to lime green, soft mauve and grey, yellow and even pink.

6. Mulla Mulla

Featuring more in October, mulla mulla have a beautiful soft mauve colour, and are cute and fluffy. These dry out really nicely as well!

7. Billy Buttons

A beautiful happy yellow colour, billy buttons are great as they dry out perfectly and last for years! They are perfect for tables in restaurants, as you can see!

8. Leucadendrons

Leucs come in different colours - different shades of green, yellow and burgundy. They last really well.

9. Pincushions

Pincushions are around in spring and summer. My favourite colours are the peachy pink, and yellow!

10. Able star

I can't find a photo of able star on their own, but they are the little mauve pom pom flowers in this photo of one of our weekly arrangements. 

They are really pretty, and yes, they also dry out nicely :)

11. Ammobium daisies

A cute little native daisy, they often have longer and more elegant stems than they usual paper daisies. They come in a bit later in the spring, and are around throughout summer.

14. Wattle

Meaning - As one species of a large genus of flora growing across Australia, the golden wattle is a symbol of unity

Wattle is native to Australia, and also introduced to other warmer climates around the world. It is often referred to overseas as "Mimosa". You can read more about how special wattle is here.
