Inside look at the flower market - March 2022

by Jane Lampe |

Well what a few weeks we've had here in Sydney, and up and down the coast!! So much rain!!

Unfortunately, many of our growers and their flowers have been affected by the deluge, but despite this, there are still lots of beautiful flowers that we are able to bring to you with our bouquets and arrangements! And the sun has come out today, so it is lovely!!

Here are a few of my favourites, that we are using a lot of at the moment in our arrangements and bouquets.

1. Cyclamen

Meaning - The empathetic, devoted heart

Cyclamen are one of my all time flowers, and yes, we use them as a cut flower!! If picked at the right stage of maturity they can last for weeks!! They are around now until early spring. Yay!

2. Sedum

Meaning: Peace and tranquility

Sedum has been around for a month or so, and is starting to mature and turn a beautiful shade of rose pink. It's strong, lasts well, and even dries out! Just keep changing the water because the stems can get a bit smelly and slimy.

3. Freesias

Meaning - friendship, trust, thoughtfulness and innocence

Freesias are gorgeous, fragrant, and elegant. They come in a mix of gorgeous creamy white, mauve, yellow, and even red that turn gold with age!! They are long lasting too - at least a week!!

4. Gloriosa

Meaning - passion, proud, honor and glory, but can also represent purity and beauty

Otherwise known as "flame lily", gloriosa is a bright, tropical style flower, long lasting, and great for unique style arrangements and bouquets.

5. Dahlias

Meaning - eternal love and commitment

Dahlias are around now until Mother's Day. They come in beautiful colours, including bright pinks and apricots, white, Burgundy, and my favourite, cafe au lait, and also different sizes, from the cute little pompom variety, to some that are as big as a plate!

Dahlias can last about a week if kept in the right spot.

6. Lisianthus

Meaning - gratefulness and charisma

Lisis come in gorgeous white, mauve, soft yellow, peachy pink, and other shades of pink, and even two-tone. They are single, double, and even frill. They are very pretty and frilly and a beautiful in feminine style bouquets.

Meaning gratefullness, they are a fitting flower for a thank you bouquet.

7. Roses

Meaning - Love

Beautiful roses are still looking great right now!!

My favourite varieties are princess, which are a stunning musk pink colour, honey dijon (no description needed?), Evelyn, which is a stunning, soft peach David Austin variety, and little old Cecile brunners, which are cute little button sized pink garden roses.  I also love soft buttery yellow roses which add a bit of fun to our bouquets.

But I also love every other colour, so I don't know why I narrow it down :)

Our beautiful locally grown roses have so much character, and the most amazing scent. And every rose has a different scent, so in line with their colour. Nature is amazing isn't it?

8. Banksia Speciosa

Meaning - Showy

Banksia speciosa is one of our favourite banksias! Masculine and strong, it looks great in our corporate arrangements, but also in our native and eclectic bouquets, and I love it's soft colour and zigzag leaves.

While not defined in the Victorian Language of Flowers, it's latin name means "showy", and it certainly is the star of the show!

9. Amaranthus

Amaranthus comes in a fresh lime green, deep red, or orange. It adds a beautiful texture to arrangements and bouquets.

Browse Floreat's bouquets in our online shop or contact us if you'd like to chat about something in particular! Here are a handful of bouquets we've made over the last few weeks with some of these gorgeous blooms.
