Beth's Review:
This wonderful book by Anna Potter feels like two genres rolled into one: floristry How-To with a side of motivation and life advice. I read this at the height of Covid-19’s impact on the flower industry, when flower supply was low, and afterward felt more relaxed, like I’d just had an hour with a therapist.
Anna takes this opportunity to incorporate all of the life lessons that working with flowers has taught her, weaving them in subtley as she walks the reader through detailed How-To’s of many different types of floristry arrangements. She reminds us of things like the importance of letting go of the things we can’t control, embracing the circumstances you didn’t have planned, and enjoying the possibility that they might lead you somewhere better.
Her approach to flowers is natural, led by the seasons, and the actual flowers themselves (she pays attentions to the colours, and natural bends and curves in flowers and let’s them guide her arrangements), and environmentally friendly – she doesn't use floral foam.
I think florists will really enjoy Anna’s honest writing. She journals which such realness, relaying anecdotes of hours of planning falling to pieces and then what happened when she rolled with the unexpected, and she has a brilliant way of translating her natural and instinctive methods into clear instructions, as if she’s scribbled down every thought she had when making each arrangement.
I think florists and flower lovers at all stages of their journey will find great value in this book.
