The Best Flower Moments in TV and Film

While some of us are bursting at the seams to get out and about into the re-opened cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants, others (like myself) are so excited about curling up on the couch for the Winter and watching some good films.

So, we've put together a list of some our favourite flower moments in TV and film just for the fun of it for all the flower lovers to enjoy.

1. Sex and The City: The Movie (2008)

One of the most iconic and fashionable wedding moments in film for me would have to be Carrie Bradshaw's failed wedding to Mr. Big in Sex and the City: The Movie. Her Vivienne Westwood gown, those bold bridesmaid dresses and mismatched “single flower en masse” bridesmaid bouquets set the trend for so many real-life weddings that came after it. Watch as Carrie's stunning bridal bouquet of white, mauve and butter coloured garden roses and gardenias end up in pieces after she uses it to hit Big for ditching their wedding. A straight-up waste of flowers or good use of the bouquet? I'm undecided. 

2. Steel Magnolias  (1989)

For those who haven't seen it, Steel Magnolias is an absolute tearjerker about a group of strong women and their lives in Louisiana that Channel 7 (or was it Channel 9?) played on repeat throughout my childhood and teenage years. It's more about the strength of women and community than flowers, but it is FILLED from start to finish with incredible 80's flower moments. Be it in the salon, in their homes or at a funeral, you still spy retro flower heaven everywhere. But Shelby's wired, cascading bridal bouquet of pink and white flowers scattered evenly through babies breathe and tied off with tizzy ribbons and tulle has to take the cake.

3. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)

Lockdown had me doing all sorts of crazy things to pass the time, like re-watching the entire Twilight Saga start to finish, and believe me it gets more cringeworthy but also weirdly more enjoyable as I age. Whether you love or hate the Twilight Saga you cannot deny that the production crew and florists nailed the flowers. Going all for Edward and Bella’s Wintery wedding, they used what looked to be an entire country's supply of white Wisteria to create an outdoor, hanging “ceiling of orchids” above the wedding guests, mini gardens to line the aisle and the fattest and tallest blossom arch I’ve laid eyes on. Bliss.

4. Big Fish (2004)

Ewan McGregor plays brilliantly a hopeless romantic in this tale of a man who “tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories”. In possibly the films most captivating scene, he makes a grand attempt to win over his dream girl by planting a sea of yellow daffodils outside her window. So extravagant, and any flower lovers dream.

5. Friends - “The One with Monica and Chandlers Wedding” (2001)

Monica and Chandler kicked off wedding trends for the new century right with a very chic choice: the single flower en masse bouquet. Monica’s all red rose bridal bouquet screamed love and romance, but let’s not forget the elegance of Pheobe and Rachel’s Calla Lilly bouquet's and Cymbidium orchid's wired into their hair. So 2000’s.

6. The Great Gatsby (2013)

In Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and Jay (Leo DiCaprio) come together amidst an absolutely ludicrous explosion of cymbidium, dendrobium, and phalaenopsis orchids. Is this not the most romantic setting for a reunion? The floral design was heavily inspired by Constance Spry, a legendary and revolutionary English florist of the 1930’s - the whole film is definitely worth a watch or re-watch for the flowers alone!

7. The Broken Flowers (2005)

I actually haven’t seen this film, but it's now been added to my viewing list after reading so many reviews about the prominence of flowers. As Bill Murray’s character embarks on a cross-country adventure to track down his long-lost son, he offers flowers to his past lovers. The bouquets change throughout - everything from picked wildflowers to a hand-tied bouquet of lilies and carnations, but the sentiment is always the same: an attempt to patch up past mistakes.

8. Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

Cherry Blossom (also known as Sakura) is a symbol for the fleeting joy and beauty of life, reminding it's viewer to be present and savour life's highs in the moment. The cherry blossom is a prominent feature in Memoirs of a Geisha, so if you are a fan of the soft pink variety then definitely add this film to your list. It is filmed in a way that makes you feel as if you are standing under the trees yourself.

9. Schitts Creek Season 6, Episode 14 – David and Patrick’s Wedding (2020)

I'll be honest, this addition to the list is not at all about the flowers. I’m fairly sure they were intentionally fake. This is however 100% about Moira’s outfit that took them one month to figure out. McQueen dress, Botticelli hair, an iconic Moira wig/hair band and hat, over the top costume jewellery, gold gloves and matching Tom Ford knee high boots. The whole complete wedding scene with Alexis' accidental bridal gown is one for the history books! 

10. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) 

A second mention goes to The Twilight Saga, because credit needs to be given to that meadow. The Meadow is a bit of a thing throughout Bella and Edward’s love story, a sanctuary for them, and it seems to get more lush as the saga progresses. By the third film, the meadow has evolved from a bit of grass and a few flowers to a dreamy field of blue and purple cosmos, lisianthus, sweet pea and scabiosa.
